This is a narcotic analgesic which is primarily known for the treatment of opiate addiction as a “substitute” for heroin. The practice generally starts with a high level equal to the amount of heroin usage and then gradually tapering the dosage to “O”.

Methadone tests are also used to insure that an individual has actually taken this drug when prescribed. It is not a highly popular drug on the street as it does not create the euphoric effect commonly sought, however an illicit market does exist and it is, itself, addictive.

This drug was famously administered to the late pop star Michael Jackson by his private doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray whom was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of the King of Pop.

Prescription and street names include Methadose, Dolophine, Symoron, juice, fizzies, and wafer.
